Mexico: The Ultimate Collapse

This is not news. We continue to see this on a yearly basis. If anything, this is the worst we have seen in decades. The once kings of CONCACAF have hit rock bottom so hard, they minus well live in a crater. Ladies and gentlemen, we’re talking about the Mexican National Team. Words aren’t enough to describe the mediocrity fans of El Tri have seen. After their dismal run, in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, making a recovery wasn’t even an idea.

Mexico recently participated in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League semi-final, having landed second place, in the inaugural edition against the USMNT, back in 2021. But still dragging the pain from the World Cup, expectations really weren’t set high for this team. Especially in a rematch.

Right from the start, El Tri was horribly disorganized. There was no definition in the manner in which they played. This squad played as if they were just picked up from a local soccer club, and given Mexican jerseys. USA’s Christian Pulisic played so elegantly, he was merely up against practice cones.

Mexico put up a fight, but not as you think. El Tri’s players showed no discipline, which resulted in two red cards, due to uncalled physical altercations. Yes, the US also had two of their players red carded, but they weren’t the ones losing the game. This mess pushed the game an extra twelve minutes. But, eight minutes in, and the game had to be stopped. El Tri’s fan base really got out of control, with their usual chant. It forced the referee to end the match, 3-0 in favor of the US.

The US would go on to beat Canada, in the Final, whereas Mexico barely beat Panama 1–0, for third place. But no one will remember that match, because of how badly Mexico was beaten.

Coach Diego Cocca was just fired. Surely no one saw that coming. Without any doubt, this is the worst incarnation of El Tri. Ten years ago, Mexico almost didn’t make it to the 2014 World Cup. They got manhandled in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, and were knocked out of the 2013 Gold Cup by a half-decent Panamanian squad. Mexico amended those failures, when Club America coach Miguel Herrera picked up the scraps, and put together a solid team.

Even as we speak, there are no signs showing that this team will change for the better. Mexico is far behind from being in a rebuilding process. We know that this team is in the middle of an identity crisis. The federation doesn’t know what it’s doing, other than burning away the careers of the current roster.

Mexico has failed to produce players with the same attributes of legends like Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Rafa Marquez, Gerardo Torrado, Andres Guardado, or Hugo Sanchez. The team has talent, but nothing is being done with it. Hirving Lozano hasn’t been a game changer since the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers. Henry Martin is also a star in the team, but not the future of the squad.

In less than a week, the 2023 Gold Cup will begin. Mexico now has a new interim coach, Jamie Lozano. Just at first glance, on paper Mexico should crush Honduras, Haiti, and Qatar. But with the implosion going on, Mexico getting 2nd place in the Group Stage will be a miracle. Taking into consideration how the Nations League turned out, there really isn’t any reason to be optimistic about El Tri. Literally, this team is in shambles, and all we can do is watch. What is your take on Mexico’s current situation?
